The Red List · Endangered register
The last of the giants
Cars that once filled every street, now countable on your fingers. This is Britain's register of the nearly gone.
Every quarter we count not just what is arriving on Britain's roads but what is leaving them for good. The tally is stark. 938 car nameplates are now extinct in the licensing data, not one example still taxed or on SORN, with another 1,606 classed critical and 705 endangered.
The extinctions that matter are not the obscure imports. They are the cars that were once everywhere, the fleet forecourt staples and driveway workhorses that a generation learned to drive in, now down to the last few dozen running examples.
| Model | At its peak | Left today | Survival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austin Montego | 234,688 | 18 | 0.01% |
| Renault 19 | 130,485 | 80 | 0.06% |
| Volvo 440 | 112,323 | 99 | 0.09% |
| Renault 21 | 99,752 | 30 | 0.03% |
| Vauxhall Belmont | 50,156 | 8 | 0.02% |
| Lada Samara | 49,053 | 7 | 0.01% |
| Daewoo Nexia | 31,384 | 8 | 0.03% |
| Zastava Yugo | 33,572 | 7 | 0.02% |
There is a poignancy in the detail. Almost none of these famous names are technically extinct. They cling on in single and double digits: eighteen Montegos, seven Samaras, seven Yugos. "The last eighteen" is a truer, sadder headline than "gone," and it is where the honest drama of a conservation register lives.
Why do humble mass market cars vanish so completely while exotica survive? Because nobody preserves a rep mobile. Rust, MOT economics and zero enthusiast value send the ordinary car to the crusher the moment it fails a test, while the rare and the loved get restored. The commonest cars of their day become the rarest survivors.
From next quarter this page gains a live feed. The pipeline now banks a conservation status snapshot each release, so we will be able to name the models that cross from critical to extinct the moment they do. The tail is already moving: this quarter 69 series recorded their last licensed example, every one already down to its final one or two cars.
