What is changing
MOVEMENT AND PRICE ACTIVITYTwo separate measurements. Activity counts individual price rises and falls observed across forecourts over recent hours. Movement is the current national median measured against AutoCensus's own retained daily reference, so a period appears only once that much history has been observed and retained. Nothing here is backfilled or modelled.

How these figures are built
Observed prices and calculated benchmarks are different things. The lowest and highest are single observed prices at named forecourts. The range and the middle price are calculated across the whole reported population and belong to no forecourt. The page never uses one in place of the other, and never calls the 10th percentile the lowest price or the 90th the highest.
Lowest and highest use the complete currently reported market. A forecourt is not removed merely because its price did not change in the last 24 hours. Short window price changes are treated as market activity instead, and every named extreme carries the time of its latest price report.
The typical price range is the 10th to 90th percentile. It sets aside the cheapest and most expensive tenth of reports at each end, so two outlying forecourts cannot define it. It is deliberately narrower than the full span of prices available.
Medians, not averages. A handful of very high or very low prices would drag an average away from the middle of the market. Each segment figure is that segment's median across its own current reports.
These are reported prices. One current price per forecourt, unweighted. They are not weighted by how much fuel each site sells or how many drivers pass it, so the figures describe what forecourts are reporting, not what motorists collectively pay.
Invalid prices are excluded. Of 26,471 current price records, 26,466 are usable and 5 are held back by hard quality rules, chiefly implausible values and probable unit scale errors. Excluded records are retained as evidence, never counted as market prices.
Comparisons need a sample on both sides. A segment comparison is published only where each side carries at least 30 current reports. Below that AutoCensus says so rather than publishing a figure it does not trust.
Checked is not the same as reported. Checked 9 hours ago is when AutoCensus last observed the market. Each price is the latest that forecourt has reported, which can be considerably older, which is why report age is shown in full rather than summarised away.
History appears only once observed. AutoCensus retains its own daily snapshots and compares the current median against them. An unobserved period is shown as unavailable, never as zero.

The national price heatmap now uses official UK local authority boundaries. Area views will be built on official UK geography rather than inferred from source location strings, which is why they remain absent rather than approximated.
